(09/01/10) Last week I got an assignment to photograph a Virgina winery, “Winery at La Grange” located in Prince William County, VA. The assignment was pretty open to interpretation, with very few guidelines other than to get some great winery images. I definitely wanted to get some photographs of the grapes on the vines, but unfortunately, the vines at La Grange winery were still young and need another 2 years to mature. I then did a little research and found out that this particular winery stays open till 8pm on Fridays throughout the summer. Perfect, that would give me nice light I would need for the outdoor portraits.
With the shoot time set, my next step was finding some models for the photo shoot. I have done a number of photography assignments for various clients where I’ve had to find participants on-location. Most of the time it works out great, but sometimes it can be hard to find just the right look. It also takes a little pressure off the assignment if you know who you’ll be working with, not to mention you’ll have more control over clothing choices. Since the assignment guidelines were pretty broad for this shoot, I thought I’d go with a “Sex and the City” look. Essentially young DC Professionals enjoying themselves at a local Virginia winery. With the help of my wife and a few of her friends we were all set.
I arrived about an hour before the models to secure the wine, props and to stage the setting. While I was waiting for the girls to arrive, I snapped a few images of La Grange’s “Tannat” red wine in their very cool, very moody, authentic basement.
The models had fun. I had fun. And most importantly, my client got the images they needed.
