Gougane Barra Forest – Revisited

30 Aug 2011, Posted by Jeff Mauritzen in Ireland, Photo Blog

Yesterday, I spoke about St. Finbarr’s Oratory, a small beautiful church located on a lake in Gougane Barra, Ireland.  Today I’d like to share a few images from the fairytale esque Gougane Barra National Forest, which lies just a stone’s throw away from the church, and yet hardly visited, despite the close proximity.

“Ireland is so green.”  You hear it a lot.  Yet the green off of the moss covered trees and stone walls is almost surreal.

I find walking through the forest is reminiscent of something one would envision while reading a story out of Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

The winding paths throughout Gougane Barra Forest are also quite picturesque.

On the two occasions I’ve hiked and photographed in the forest, I’ve come across the remains of a sheep.  Whether the victim of a fox or something more sinister, who can say.  But the sheep’s skull propped up below was certainly eerie to see.
